Ammonia
Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH₃. It is produced when the waste produced by our Koi is dissolved in our pond water. Ammonia is extremely toxic and the primary way it’s removed from our ponds, is by filtration.
As the primary source of toxic ammonia in our ponds are the Koi, and the waste they produce via respiration, poo, and urine, it’s important to understand therefore that toxic ammonia is present on an ongoing basis, and it needs to be dealt with as such. It’s also important to understand that the more we feed our Koi, the more waste, hence more ammonia is produced.
