Koi Nutrition

If there was a single topic in Koi that generates most debate its probably the question: “what food shall I feed my Koi?”

This is probably the only information element in our entire information resource centre where we are reluctant to tell you what to do. This isn’t because we don’t have a view, but because there is a genuinely excellent selection of Koi food ranges available today.

Koi food is a bit like hairdresser’s we tend to stick with those that we know and are happy with! So best advice is to try a few and see which performs best for you and your Koi. Every pond is different and what works for one individual doesn’t for another.

Establishing which is best for you is a process, but our absolutely definitive advice would be stick to proprietary brands tried and tested for years by generations of real Koi Keepers.

Once again we recommend and sell only those which we have found to deliver! It’s also important to consider that different food types are designed for different purposes; colour, growth etc. We also believe wheatgerm is a massively underrated food and strongly recommend thats included as a component feeding year element.

Koi food also comes in sinking and floating formats. The floating format offers us a level of excitement when the Koi feed, and the opportunity to get close to the Koi and check them visually for any issues. The sinking format doesn’t offer the same level of excitement for us, but it can be a safer option for our Koi, for example to help minimise a potentially damaging feeding frenzy, or some slower feeding or shy individuals to get some food. Some people prefer to use a 50 / 50 floating sinking feed for the reasons mentioned above, there are a couple of issues with that, like food going down the bottom drain, and not being able to properly monitor what is being eaten and what is being left. In our further advice section we’ll offer you more information on why and how.

We’d also like to mention auto feeders here. While they are useful, they also have limitations and are not without risks, in particular malfunctions can end up dumping the entire contents in your pond, so bear this in mind and that in this regard you generally do get what you pay for.
