Parasites – Trichodina, Costia, Flukes, et al

Parasites are a major cause of health issues with our Koi. In order to minimise the risks they pose its important to know what they are, what they look like, and how to control them.

It’s also important to understand parasites are present in all Koi ponds, they are part of the ecosystem that is your Koi pond, and can happily co-exist without detriment to our pets. However, they are also opportunist, and if water quality dips due for example to rapid changes in kH, pH, oxygen or overfeeding, including overstocking or poor husbandry, or a combination of any of the aforementioned, the parasite population can increase exponentially, and very quickly.

In these circumstances the offending parasite represents an immediate and very real threat to your Koi. So if this happens to you, and it will at some point, its vital that you quickly identify which parasite(s) are problematic, and take measures to control them.
