The thirteen varieties are primarily for the purposes of Koi shows, where they provide appropriate judging categories, but they also provide a useful framework of broad categories for us to learn from.

There are however more than 100 individual types of Koi within these 13 Variety classifications, which represents a major topic in itself.

Best advice is not to try and absorb them all at once, the thirteen classifications provide much more bite size chunks, for you to learn.

To help with this we’ll provide detailed descriptions and examples of each, and try and include as many of the 100 as we can.
